EVG Contest Program 2025

Program Directory

Welcome to the 2025 Evergreen District Convention!

Welcome to the 2025 Evergreen District annual convention and contest. We are so glad you have joined us for “Season of Harmony” at the beautiful Chandos Pattison Auditorium in Surrey, British Columbia. It is wonderful to return to Canada for the first time since 2013.

With the return of Division contests in the Spring of 2026, this contest does not include qualifying quartets for BHS International in July 2026.  We will still be choosing a Senior Quartet to represent EVG at BHS’s Midwinter convention in Pasadena, CA, a chorus or choruses to represent EVG for BHS International in July 2026, and a new District Quartet Champion.

Our headquarters hotel is the Civic Hotel.  You do not want to miss the Saturday night President’s Reception and Afterglow on the 2nd floor of the Civic. During intermissions and breaks at the Chandos, make sure you check out the tables set up in the lobby of the auditorium. There is Evergreen History as well as opportunities to get more information about the Bud Leabo Memorial Fund, Harmony Foundation International and other upcoming events!

I want to give a huge thank you to the individuals on the District Events team who have been working hard to make this happen. Jay Krumbholz, our DRCJ making sure all judging things are working well. Don Cain, who worked with the Civic. Donavan Skaggs our technical champion, videographer, live streamer. Rob Macdonald who handled awards,  transportation and worked with Donavan on the program. Greg Kronlund who kept you up to date on all thing’s convention. Larry Breitbarth, “the money guy” handling all things money. David Dobson worked on Zeffy and helped registration along. Kevin Robertson was our volunteer coordinator extraordinaire.  Joanne Lacroix and all of the volunteers from Westcoast Harmony (SAI) – they filled most of the 90+ volunteer positions needed to make the Convention run smoothly, along with others from the District. If you see someone with a “volunteer” tag, make sure you say a big thank you to them. Thank you to Bill Hickman, president of the Evergreen District Board for his support and encouragement to our team!

Music is a bridge which brings us together, especially in these challenging times.  May this weekend be filled with harmony, joy, and laughter as we share this “Season of Harmony” Take time to sing tags or woodshed with friends old and new from across the district on Thursday or Friday nights on the 2nd floor of the Civic.

Thanks for your participation – as a singer, contestant, and audience, and save the dates for the 2026 District Convention October 2-3 in Boise, ID

EVG District Events Director

Why “Season of Harmony”?

This year’s theme draws on the splendors of the fall season, calling our members to come together across the lines and distances which separate us. With incredible diversity in our membership throughout the states, provinces, regions and chapters, we create rich, colorful harmonies from what others might perceive as random or chaotic. And weathered walls.are not a barrier to separate us, but a musical staff to unite us, as we sing the old songs together.

How Does a Contest Get Judged?

We have a double panel of Judges for the contests, assigned by the Barbershop Harmony Society, so each judging category has three judges. Results are based on aggregate scores from each category, for each song performed. Here are the categories being judged:

Musicality (MUS)

Musicality is defined as the song and arrangement, as performed. The Musicality Category judges the suitability of the material to the barbershop style and the performer’s musicianship in bringing the song and arrangement to life.

The Musicality judge is responsible for adjudicating the musical elements in the performance, judging the extent to which the musical performance displays the hallmarks of the barbershop style and the degree to which the musical performance demonstrates an artistic sensitivity to the music’s primary theme(s).

The sensitive handling of musical elements, such as melody, harmony, and embellishments, demonstrates musicality in a performance. A strong musical performance is one in which everything provided by the composer and arranger is skillfully delivered and effectively integrated in support of the musical theme.

Performance (PER)

The Performance judges evaluate how effectively a performer brings the song to life. They judge the entertainment value of the performance, the art of the performance.

One significant goal of any art form is communication. A barbershop performance refers to how the artist communicates his/her message and vision via the transformation of a song into an entertaining experience for an audience. The performance of a song is the artist’s gift to the audience; whose experiences, memories, and imagination transform that gift into an emotional experience. The performers’ goal is to create a high level of entertainment through the performance. The means to that end are as varied as the personality, abilities and creative skills of the performers.

Singing (SNG)

In the Singing category we judge artistic singing in the barbershop style – listening holistically for ringing in-tune voices that use a free, beautiful and rich vocal quality, which is wonderfully unified and vocally expressive.

Judges in this category evaluate the degree to which the performer achieves artistic singing in the barbershop style: the production of vibrant, rich, resonant, technically accurate, and highly skilled sound, created both by the individual singer’s use of good vocal techniques, and by the ensemble processes of tuning, balancing, unity of sound and precision. They listen for a sense of precise intonation, a feeling of fullness or expansion of sound, a perception of a high degree of vocal skill, a high level of unity and consistency throughout the performance, and a freedom from apparent effort that allows the full communication of the lyric and song.

National Anthem Lyrics

The Star-Spangled Banner

Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed
at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars
through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched
were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare,
the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night
that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

O Canada

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love
in all of us command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

A Message from Donny Rose, Harmony Foundation International

Hello friends,

I’m Donny Rose, and I’m glad to be here with you at the Evergreen District Convention this weekend in Surrey.

Barbershoppers have always looked beyond themselves. Back in Tacoma, my chapter passed the hat every week for the Institute of Logopedics and sang Joe Liles’ “We Sing That They Shall Speak.” Thousands of barbershoppers gave, and together we changed lives.

Times have changed, but the question is the same: how do we secure the future of this music we love?

That’s where Harmony Foundation comes in. Through Donor’s Choice, HFI has returned hundreds of thousands of dollars to chapters, districts, brigades, and BHS—keeping doors open and chords ringing. We also support programs that spread harmony everywhere: youth events, scholarships at Harmony University, AIC quartets visiting schools, and even the Power of Harmony program bringing music into juvenile prisons.

Just like in the days of Logopedics, these efforts make the world better—but they depend on all of us. The good news? Even a little goes a long way. Most of us spend more on coffee or streaming each month. For as little as $10 a month, you can strengthen your chapter, fuel programs for the next generation, and help make sure barbershop keeps thriving.

Barbershop has given us friendships, joy, and those goosebumps from a ringing chord. Now it’s our turn to give back. Let’s be the ones who make sure the song never stops.

—Donny Rose
